People say 'blood is thicker than water' but I've never believed that. I love my family but the family I've chosen for myself means something a bit more. Or perhaps choose is not strong enough word -- drawn to, would be more accurate. Magnets, planet aligning, call it what you will. Labels aren't important to me. What is important is fact. What is important is the people who are unconditionally there for you.
My father is a director, although he hasn't directed anything in about 8 years. They're all French movies filmed and produced in France. Why yes, I can fluently speak French, if you were wondering. My mom used to be a model. A model and a director - that my parents are both perfectionists is an understatement. Of course, neither of them really work any more but both of them love to chime in on my career. Communication is best kept at a minimum.
So it was me and my sister Nina - she's a couple years younger - against the world. We lived in Los Angeles full time, but would spend summers in France. Our parents would cart us off there at other times too, if they were going on a trip of their own or we had a school break coming up that they didn't feel like having us home all day for. Which was fine, France is pretty damn cool. Of course, I haven't been there since I was 17, but how much changes in 4 years? Actually, that's a dumb question - a lot can change in 4 years. Almost everything. You meet people who can shape the fabric of your life. You do things you never dreamed of. You fall in ways you never quite expected. You pick yourself up. And - inevitably - repeat.
Right now I'm 21, I love in New York City and I couldn't be happier. I'm trying to build a body of work that one day I can look back and be proud of. And of course, I'm trying to have fun. Because really, my childhood was a little deprived. Did I mention having a former model and a director for parents? So bring on the good times, people. Let's do this.
